A wry smile is all John Betts reveals when asked about Burger King’s imminent takeover of the beloved Canadian coffee chain Tim Hortons.

“Nothing surprises me,” says the president and CEO of McDonald’s Canada, a 44-year veteran of the Oak Brook, Ill. chain who took over the Canadian operation in 2008. “It was not too long ago that somebody else [Wendy’s International Inc.] was with the other guys,” a reference to rival Tim Hortons Inc.
